Lead. Protect. Investigate. Your future starts here
May 6, 2025
Looking for a career that’s fast-paced, purpose-driven and built around real impact? The Protection, Security and Investigation program at 51ÊÓƵ is designed to prepare you for a future where no two days look the same. Whether you’re interested in front-line security, private investigation, emergency response, cybercrime prevention or national safety, this program equips you with the skills to step into critical roles across a range of sectors.
Build on your background
If you’ve worked in security, policing, corrections, the military or a similar field, you’ve already created a strong foundation to build from. The skills you’ve developed, such as staying calm under pressure, making quick decisions and communicating clearly, can serve as the perfect starting point for new career opportunities. Plus, through transfer credits or Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition, you may be able to earn credit for your past experience and training, which can shorten your time in the classroom. This means you would spend less time reviewing familiar material and more time focusing on learning new tools, earning certifications and developing your leadership skills.
Whether you are interested in investigating crimes, responding to emergencies or deterring threats, this program equips you with the tools, mindset and experience to get there.

The program is available through GC Flex, which allows you to study online, in person or through a combination of both. You can also attend this program in a full-time or a part-time capacity, depending on which suits your lifestyle best. This flexibility is ideal if you are balancing a busy schedule. You will learn from experienced faculty who have served in the Canadian Forces, worked with the Department of National Defence and built careers in policing, emergency management and corporate security. They know what it takes to succeed in the field and are committed to helping you reach your goals.

Start strong with skills that matter
If you are new to the industry, this program offers a strong introduction to the mindset and practical skills needed to succeed in high-pressure situations. You will learn to think critically, act responsibly and stay focused when it matters most. Smaller class sizes allow your professors to get to know your strengths, your learning style and how you grow throughout the program. These relationships often lead to mentorship, guidance and valuable career opportunities after graduation.
Each year, the students say one of the most memorable parts of the program is the three-week theft investigation simulation. You will work in small groups to lead a complex case from start to finish, identifying persons of interest, conducting interviews, detecting deception and trying to solve the crime. Students from other programs play the roles of witnesses and suspects, creating a dynamic and realistic learning environment. Whether your group solves the case or not (not all do), you will gain valuable insight into what it takes to lead a real investigation.

Launch your career with a semester in the field
In your final semester, you will apply your learning in a full-time internship. Students have completed internships with the , hospital security teams, police services, private investigation firms and municipal bylaw offices. Many describe their internship as a turning point in their education. It often leads to job offers or helps students determine their long-term career direction. During your internship, you will be encouraged to keep a journal of your day-to-day interactions. This record is more than a course requirement, it becomes a useful resource as you prepare for interviews and reflect on the experiences that shaped your growth.
Throughout the program, you will explore topics such as emergency planning, national and corporate security, cybersecurity, threat prevention and crisis response. Course content is aligned with federal security standards, helping to ensure your education is relevant and up to date. Some students begin the program with the goal of joining the police. Others discover interests in emergency management or private investigation. No matter your direction, you will graduate with the skills, knowledge and experience to lead with professionalism and integrity.
If you are ready to take that step, we are ready to help you make it. Learn more about the Protection, Security and Investigation program or connect with the Credit for Prior Learning team to find out how your experience could help you fast-track your future.
